The Auvergne in general caters well for anyone on holiday in the area, the region around Ambert has a particularly rich assortment of clearly marked walking paths and cycle tracks to explore. For the more adventurous there are opportunities for paragliding, microliting and short pitch rock climbing.
If all that sounds a little too energetic, a trip on the panoramic railway that runs through the valley makes a great day out. It offers stunning views of the valley and gorge, all from the comfort of the observation car.
The area has a rich history illustrated in the architecture, various museums and working paper mill. The mill has a visitors centre and there are guided tours that take you through the paper making process. There is also a very pleasant walking route that takes you past the other mills in the area.
