No matter how many documentaries you’ve seen or magazine articles you’ve read, nothing really prepares you for rural French property ownership. Sights that send the average British property owner running for the Yellow pages are the norm. Properties that would attract attention from your council’s health and safety department, are described as “absolutely habitable” . That said, if you are able to see beyond the crumbling floorboards, leaking roofs and carpeted walls, then your home really can feel like a castle here in the Auvergne.
We took on a house in very good condition by local standards, it has still taken us a whole year working 7 days a week to realise the dream. The photos below show the before and afters in two of the rooms. (Click on the photos for more views)
